Digging Down in Time – Korazim National Park
What? As part of the ongoing archeological digs at the Korazim National Park, a stone press adorned with an impressive mosaic floor was unearthed. This press has a large collection vat. The apparatus seems to have been a kind of self-serve setup for use by village residents as needed. This is the only mosaic floor discovered at the site which has been dug on and off ever since the 1920s. It is also the only mosaic floored press known to us in the entire Golan Heights area, and dates from the Talmudic era (400-600 CE). The press is adjacent to a spacious residential structure which is itself adjacent to a magnificent synagogue. It seems that an affluent community lived in the area. The Korazim National Park is home to research digs, educational digs and tourism digs. It’s one of the few archeological sites in Israel where you can experience real knowledge-based digging! Activities include receiving necessary tools and being led by an archeological expert. Are your kids complaining that you dig in too deep on certain issues? Come and dig together with them for a great family experience at Korazim National Park. When? 7 June and 10 June 2019. “Digging down in time.” Register and pay by calling *3639 How much? The Wine God and the Wine Path Festival
What? One of the most impressive spots in the Tzippori National Park is the House of Dionysus, the ancient Greek god of wine. In fact it’s a spacious villa, named because of the stunning floor mosaic in the building’s central room. The mosaic depicts the life and rites around the god of wine. The House of Dionysus was built in the 3rd century CE. Researchers estimate that the structure was destroyed in the 363 CE earthquake. In one section of the mosaic we see the image of a woman titled “the Mona Lisa of the Galilee.” The mosaic’s central motif is Dionysus, god of the wine. Each scene is marked by the Greek names of the image or their significance. The central, largest picture describes a drinking competition between Dionysus and Heracles. The other 14 scenes represent Dionysus’ childhood, his marriage to Ariadne, the victory parade after his journey to India, various rituals and ceremonies conducted by the deity accompanied by his entourage, with descriptions of folklore linked to grapes and wine. When? As part of the Galilee Wine Path Festival. Fridays, 11:00 | Saturdays: 11:00, 13:00 We recommend visiting on weekends during June and enjoying the free tours given by national park volunteers. How much? Only the national park entry fee. Free to national park subscribers.
